Welcome to PactPass
These terms explain how you can use PactPass, our social password recovery service. We've written them in plain English to make them easy to understand. By using PactPass, you agree to these terms.
What PactPass Does
PactPass helps you securely store and recover your important secrets using social recovery. Here's how it works:
- Secret Splitting: Your secrets are split into encrypted pieces
- Guardian Network: You choose trusted people to hold these pieces
- Recovery Process: If you lose access, your guardians can help you recover your secrets
- Zero-Knowledge: We never see your actual secrets - everything is encrypted on your device
Your Account
Creating an Account
To use PactPass, you need to create an account. When you do:
- Choose a unique username
- Create a strong password (we recommend using a password manager)
- You must be at least 13 years old
- Provide accurate information
Account Security
You're responsible for keeping your account secure:
- Keep your password safe - Don't share it with anyone
- Choose trustworthy guardians - They'll help you recover your secrets
- Tell us about suspicious activity - Contact us if something doesn't look right
- Update your information - Keep your account details current
How to Use PactPass Responsibly
What You Can Do
- Store your personal passwords and other secrets
- Share encrypted secret pieces with people you trust
- Use the recovery process when you lose access to your account
- Export your data if you want to switch to another service
What You Can't Do
- Illegal activities: Don't use PactPass for anything against the law
- Harmful content: No storing or sharing content that could harm others
- System abuse: Don't try to break or overwhelm our systems
- Impersonation: Don't pretend to be someone else
- Spam or harassment: Don't send unwanted messages to other users
Service Availability
Uptime and Maintenance
We work hard to keep PactPass running smoothly, but sometimes things happen:
- Scheduled maintenance: We may need to take the service offline for updates
- Unexpected downtime: Technical issues can sometimes cause outages
- We'll communicate: We'll let you know about planned maintenance when possible
Service Changes
We may update PactPass from time to time to add features or improve security. We'll notify you of major changes that affect how you use the service.
Important Limitations
What We're Not Responsible For
While we do our best to provide a secure service, there are some things beyond our control:
- Guardian reliability: We can't control whether your guardians respond to recovery requests
- Device security: We can't protect secrets on compromised devices
- User mistakes: We can't recover secrets if you lose access to your account and all your guardians
- Third-party services: We're not responsible for other services you use with PactPass
Liability Limits
PactPass is provided "as is." We limit our liability to the maximum extent allowed by law. This means we're not responsible for indirect damages, lost profits, or other consequential losses. Our maximum liability is limited to the amount you've paid us in the past 12 months.
Ending Your Account
If You Want to Leave
You can delete your account anytime:
- Use the "Delete Account" option in your settings
- We'll remove your personal data (see our Privacy Policy for details)
- Your guardians will be notified that you're no longer using the service
- Some data may be kept for legal or security reasons
If We End Your Account
We may suspend or terminate accounts that:
- Violate these terms
- Engage in illegal activities
- Pose a security risk to other users
We'll give you reasonable notice when possible, but may act immediately if there's a serious violation or security threat.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms occasionally. When we do:
- We'll notify you: Through email or a notice in the app
- You'll have time to review: Major changes won't take effect immediately
- You can leave: If you don't like the changes, you can delete your account
- Continued use means acceptance: Using PactPass after changes means you agree to the new terms
